December 12, 2000MOTION BY SUPERVISORS ZEV YAROSLAVSKY AND MICHAEL ANTONOVICH
In June 1999, the County Board of Supervisors voted to join the San Fernando Valley Transportation Zone Interim Joint Powers Authority. The Interim JPA was formed to allow the member agencies to formally participate and study the idea of creating a transportation zone for the San Fernando Valley. It also allowed the member agencies to act in a unified manner and speak with one voice. The Interim JPA has met regularly and has just completed a feasibility study on a transit zone for the San Fernando Valley. The Interim JPA Board met yesterday and signified its intent to proceed with an application to form a transit zone. This application process is expected to take several months as the Interim JPA will have to negotiate many details with the MTA.
The Interim JPA is scheduled to sunset at the end of this month. The members of the Joint Powers Authority voted yesterday to extend the term of the Interim JPA until December 31, 2001. The County of Los Angeles, as a member agency, must also vote to continue its membership in the Interim JPA and support an extension of the Interim JPA for the San Fernando Valley.
WE, THEREFORE, MOVE that the County of Los Angeles support an extension of the Interim Joint Powers Authority for the San Fernando Valley Transportation Zone and authorize the Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors sign an amendment extending the Interim JPA until December 31, 2001.
