MOTION BY SUPERVISOR ZEV YAROSLAVSKY

Today we have the opportunity to approve a balanced proposal for rehabilitation of an icon – the shell at the Hollywood Bowl. This project will allow the Bowl to reach its potential as a state of the art outdoor performance attraction while retaining the recognizable curved outline which honors the tradition and design legacy of the 1929 shell. In addition to approving the recommendations before us, it is essential that we recognize the treasure represented by the Bowl Complex and pledge to protect and honor the history of this unique County Performing Arts venue as we enter the 21st Century. In light of the testimony and the record here, we should approve this project and ensure that the Bowl experience is both preserved and enhanced.

I, THEREFORE, MOVE that the Board of Supervisors approve the staff recommendations in the Board letter; and

I FURTHER MOVE that in order to emphasize the importance of the site, the Board of Supervisors designate the Hollywood Bowl Performing Arts Complex, with the new project elements, as "County of Los Angeles Cultural Landmark No. 1" and request that the Los Angeles County Historical Landmarks and Records Commission memorialize this local historic resource listing and coordinate the placement of an appropriate County plaque at the site with the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association; and

I FURTHER MOVE that the Director of Parks and Recreation clarify the second and third cultural mitigation measures to provide that the Hollywood Bowl Master Plan will be updated to incorporate the results of the required historic structures report and require that the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association consult with the Los Angeles Conservancy and Hollywood Heritage on the required interpretive program. The appropriate language for these measures has been drafted by County Counsel and is attached to this motion.
