Yaroslavsky Breaks Ground for San Fernando Health Center - On May 14, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky was joined by San Fernando City Councilmember Cindy Montanez, Health Department officials and employees to break ground for the County’s new San Fernando Health Center, replacing the old facility which was severely damaged and demolished after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. The 10,000-sq. ft., facility will be located at 1212 Pico St. in the City of San Fernando, and is expected to open by May 2000. Click here for release.

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky (sixth from left) is joined by Ernest Espinoza (right), Assistant Administrator for ValleyCare (the County’s San Fernando Valley public/private health care network), and nurses from the San Fernando Health Center to break ground for the County’s new replacement San Fernando Health Center. The project will be a 10,000-sq. ft., one-story wood-framed building over a 34-space semi-subterranean parking garage, replacing the original facility which was severely damaged and demolished following the January 1994 Northridge earthquake. Gun Dealer Crackdown Wins Final Approval - On May 25, the Board of Supervisors gave final approval to Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky’s joint motion with Supervisor Gloria Molina to crack down on illegal activity at the Great Western Gun Show held at the Los Angeles County fairgrounds in Pomona. Yaroslavsky’s motion followed up on Board action originally taken more than a year ago, and was reinforced by the results of a recent "sting" operation carried out at the show by the State Attorney General’s office, which yielded evidence of illegal gun trafficking, and resulted in several arrests. Yaroslavsky Announces Domestic Partner Registry Up and Running - On May 6, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder officially unveiled its Domestic Partner Registry, established on a motion and ordinance sponsored by Supervisor Yaroslavsky. The Registry is designed to assist domestic partners who reside or work in Los Angeles County in establishing eligibility for health benefits and other programs which may be offered by their employers or others. Yaroslavsky Announces Community-Based Organization Service Contracts in Third District - Supervisor Yaroslavsky has announced Board approval for a package of service contracts with various community-based organizations serving at-risk youth under supervision by the Los Angeles County Probation Department. Agencies serving portions of the Third District receiving funds are: Los Angeles Free Clinic, $10,000; Valley Community Clinic, $40,000; Project HEAVY WEST, $30,000; Catholic Big Brothers, $325,000; WRAP Agency, $45,000; El Nido Family Centers, $55,000; Cal State, Northridge, $175,000; Bridge Focus, Inc., $35,000; New Directions for Youth, $45,000; San Martin De Porres Center, $40,000; YWCA of Greater LA, $35,000; Korean Youth and Community Center, $25,000; Hamburger Home, Inc., $30,000; Communities in Schools, $10,000; Stirling Academy, Inc./Behavioral Health Institute, $20,000; Hollywood Entertainment Museum, $25,000; Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, $35,000; El Centro De Amistad, $29,000; Centinela Valley Juvenile Diversion Project, $30,000; Special Service for Groups, $30,000; Santa Monica Bay Area Drug Abuse Council/New Start, $35,000; El Proyecto Del Barrio, $40,000; I-ADARP, $49,000; L.A. Yaroslavsky Announces Beach Bus, Paratransit Renewal - Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced renewal of a program to provide summer beach bus service to the Topanga Canyon area, running from June 21 to September 6 on weekdays along Topanga Canyon Boulevard from Viewridge to Santa Monica Beach, stopping at Topanga Elementary School and the General store. The outbound bus will carry mountains residents to Santa Monica Beach, running at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 noon, and 1:30 p.m.; four will also return from the beach, running at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Yaroslavsky also announced the renewal of contracts to provide continued paratransit services for senior citizens and persons with disabilities residing in the Third District, in a program that has operated continuously since 1983.
