Yaroslavsky Unveils Proposed "Saturday Night Special" Junk Gun Ban

junkguns.bmp (293614 bytes)

On January 20, Supervisor Yaroslavsky, joined by Sheriff Lee Baca and West Hollywood Councilmember Paul Koretz, unveiled a proposed ordinance to ban the sale of new "Saturday Night Special" handguns and other "junk guns" in unincorporated County territory. "These guns are too cheap and unsafe for reliable self-defense, and too inaccurate for target practice and sport," Yaroslavsky said, "but unfortunately, they’re just perfect for committing crimes." Yaroslavsky won preliminary Board approval two years ago for his proposal, but its enforceability remained in doubt until the state Supreme Court in December 1998 let stand a lower court ruling upholding the legality of a similar ordinance passed by the City of West Hollywood. The measure will be calendared for Board consideration on February 2, 1999. Click here for more details.

Yaroslavsky Announces Transfer of Charmlee Natural Area County Park to City of Malibu - Supervisor Yaroslavsky recently announced Board approval of a plan to transfer Charmlee Natural Area County Park to the City of Malibu for passive recreation and coastal habitat conservation purposes. Yaroslavsky noted that 80% of Charmlee’s 358 acre site lies inside the City of Malibu, which has been operating the park since 1993. "This deal just makes good sense," Yaroslavsky said, "and will protect public access to this precious resource."

Yaroslavsky Announces Beach Improvements - Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced approval of a $657,000 contract with Gruen Associates for architectural/engineering design services for a beach improvement project at Will Rogers State Beach. Yaroslavsky said the project entails replacing restrooms and concession buildings; refurbishing parking lots and constructing new lot entrances; installing new playground equipment and portable lifeguard stations; upgrading the lifeguard headquarters, revetment restoration to repair beach erosion, and landscaping. Grazing Goats To Join County Firefighting Team - FEMA recently awarded Los Angeles County a $161,360 Hazard Mitigation Grant for a pilot project to recruit a firefighting battalion of grazing goats to help maintain a fuelbreak on a remote ridge in the fire-prone Santa Monica Mountains. Fuelbreaks slow advancing wildfires by reducing their intensity long enough to give firefighters an opportunity to bring them under control. Firefighting agencies traditionally maintain the fuelbreaks with hand crews, heavy equipment, and herbicides, but officials are hopeful the goats will prove to be a cost-effective and environmentally sensitive alternative. If not, say officials, they’ll revert to controlled burns instead. Click here for more details.

Homeowner’s Guide For Flood, Debris and Erosion Control Now Available On-Line - Supervisor Yaroslavsky is urging all County residents in hillside and flood-prone areas to peruse a homeowner’s guide on flood protection now available on-line through the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Web site. The address: http://dpw.co.la.ca.us/pln/HomeOwners/enter.cfm Yaroslavsky noted that free copies of the guide are also available in hard copy by writing to:
