New Location for Van Nuys District Office, Grand Opening of San Fernando Valley
Registrar-Recorder/County Clerks District Office
Supervisor Yaroslavsky has moved his Van Nuys District Office into new and expanded quarters, which will also house a new San Fernando Valley District Office for the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. The new site is located at 14340 Sylvan Street in Van Nuys, near the intersection of Victory and Van Nuys Boulevards. Yaroslavsky noted that this will be the first time that birth certificates, marriage licenses and other Registrar-Recorder counter services will be located close to the San Fernando Valley since 1991, when budget cuts forced the department to consolidate its operations in Norwalk, a 70-mile round trip away. Yaroslavsky praised Bradley warmly as "Often my ally, sometimes my adversary, always my friend." Click here for the complete text of Yaroslavskys statement of tribute.

(9/19/98) Board Adopts Yaroslavsky Proposal to Ease Child-Care Woes for Participants in Countys Welfare-to-Work Program - On September 15, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Supervisor Yaroslavskys motion to establish a child-care hotline in the Department of Public Social Services to assist participants in the CALWORKS welfare-to-work program in finding child-care referrals and resources. Yaroslavskys motion addressed growing concerns that welfare recipients with children, eligible for government child-care subsidies and eager for training and job opportunities, have been unable to obtain adequate child care to permit their full participation in the job-training program.
Yaroslavsky Announces Community Delinquency Prevention Grants for Northeast Valley, Westside - Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced that a package of Community Delinquency Prevention Grants was recently awarded to various nonprofit agencies serving youth and families in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, Hollywood, and the Westside. Under the terms of the grants, the new funding is intended for youth not served under existing programs, and must be used to augment, not supplant, current programs serving participants residing in the Third District. Yaroslavsky Plan to Boost Road Safety Moves Ahead - Also on September 15, the Board adopted Yaroslavskys plan to initiate a Countywide program aimed at reducing the number of incidents of motorists running red lights by improving technology and electronic monitoring of problem intersections. Yaroslavskys motion directs County Public Works officials to develop an appropriate bid proposal in which bidders, not taxpayers, would bear the cost for installation and maintenance of a pilot red-light camera surveillance program, in return for a share of the resulting ticket revenues.
Proposition A Santa Monica Bay Grant Applications Window Now Open - The time-window is now open for 1998 Santa Monica Bay Competitive Grant applications under two ballot measures each known as Proposition A, which generated a total of $859 million for park, open-space and recreational improvement projects. Some $8 million was earmarked on a competitive basis to public agencies to restore and improve the Santa Monica Bay, with $2,738,065 remaining to be allocated. The deadline to submit proposals is December 15, 1998 at 5 p.m., with final approval of Selection Committee recommendations by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board anticipated by the end of February, 1999. Grant applications can be any amount, but those larger than $50,000 are strongly encouraged to assure a significant positive impact on Bay clean-up efforts.
