Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky (right) punches home a point as Dr. Jonathan Fielding, Los Angeles County Director of Public Health Programs and Services, looks on. Yaroslavsky and Fielding appeared at a press conference to announce the findings of a new County health survey of teen attitudes toward smoking, undertaken as part of the County’s ongoing tobacco-control program. The survey found that while 48% of teens polled would quit or cut down if cigarette prices went up by 50 cents per pack, raising the price by $1.00 would cause nearly 70% of those asked to cut back or quit. In addition, the study found that 66% of teens surveyed worried about becoming addicted, 73% worried about harming others, and 81%, or 4 out of 5, of the teens worried that it was bad for their health.
