Board Adopts Yaroslavsky Call to Speed Immigration Processing - On May 5, the Board unanimously adopted Supervisor Yaroslavskys motion instructing the Chief Administrative Officer to identify County resources to assist the Los Angeles District Office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in processing citizenship applications, and to negotiate an arrangement to speed the citizenship process and relieve the current backlog. Yaroslavsky explained that Los Angeles County now represents about 25% of the immigration application cases awaiting resolution.
Board of Supervisors Adopts Yaroslavsky Call to Curb Tobacco Sponsorships, Tighten Regulation of Gun Shows at County Venues - Capping a months-long effort that began in Fall 1997, the Board of Supervisors on May 19 adopted a motion by Supervisor Yaroslavsky and co-sponsor Supervisor Gloria Molina to develop a Countywide policy to promote public health by curtailing tobacco sponsorship of events at County-owned venues and sites, and to work with the Los Angeles County Fair Association to bring gun dealers into full compliance with all applicable laws when participating in gun shows conducted at the County fairgrounds.
MTA Board Approves Yaroslavsky 7-Point Plan to Improve Public Safety Along Passenger Train Tracks - On May 21, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board approved a 7-point plan by Yaroslavsky and fellow Board member Yvonne Brathwaite Burke to improve public safety along the Countys inter-city Metrolink and light-rail passenger train track routes. Noting a recent increase in the number of vehicle/train collisions along the lines, including two fatal accidents within the previous two weeks, the motion directed MTA officials to develop and cost out a comprehensive safety program and report back in 60 days. The program is to include both educational efforts and new equipment such as crossing arms, gates, additional lighting, heightened photo enforcement, and tougher penalties for violators.
Yaroslavsky Blasts Drugging of Foster Children, Calls for Reform - Noting recent press reports alleging widespread and indiscriminate use of drugs to subdue and sedate foster children in neighboring Orange County, Yaroslavsky introduced a motion calling on Los Angeles County officials to develop a plan of action to ensure full compliance with state regulations requiring foster caretakers to be provided with current health, medical and educational information on each dependent child under their supervision. Yaroslavsky explained that without the information, neither the courts nor their caretakers could accurately assess a childs medical needs or properly weigh the risks of such medications.
