May 2004 Yaroslavsky Urges Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Soka University to Explore Sale of Calabasas Site for Public Parkland – Encouraged by a meeting of the principals convened in his office, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky urged the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and Soka University of America in a May 20, 2004 letter to explore the potential sale and transfer of the Soka University property in Calabasas to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy for public parkland. Yaroslavsky described the approximately 600 acres at the corner of Mulholland Drive and Las Virgenes Road as “the most important unprotected property in the Santa Monica Mountains,” noting that “every plan of every natural resource agency has identified this site as being critical to the future of this mountain range.” Yaroslavsky
Takes Topanga Out to the Ball Game – On May 16, 2004,
Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky celebrated the grand opening of the newly
refurbished Topanga Community House Ballfield by throwing a few pitches
and shagging flies with some 200 delighted Topanga children and parents.
The event capped a year of effort by community volunteers – with
a financial boost from Yaroslavsky, the Amateur Athletic Foundation,
and local donors – to renovate the ballfield, first established
in 1986. Click Topanga Summer Beach Bus Ready to Roll – Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced that the Topanga summer beach bus is ready to roll, offering residents in the Woodland Hills and Topanga Canyon area an opportunity to enjoy the beach during the hot summer months. Air-conditioned, wheelchair-accessible buses are now ferrying riders to Topanga, Will Rogers and Santa Monica Beaches. Bus stops include Topanga Canyon at Ventura Boulevard, Woodland Park Mobil Estates, Topanga Canyon at Viewridge Road, Topanga Canyon Boulevard in front of Topanga Elementary School, and by the General Store, next to the Post Office. Regular fare is 50 cents each way; children under 12 must be accompanied by a fare paying parent or guardian. Seniors over 62 and people with disabilities can ride for 25 cents each way.
