March 2003 Yaroslavsky Hails Settlement of County Foster-Care Lawsuit - On Thursday, March 12, 2003, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky was joined by Supervisor Gloria Molina; Mark Rosenbaum, Legal Director for the ACLU of Southern California; and other child-welfare advocates to announce the partial settlement of a 2002 lawsuit filed against the County of Los Angeles and the State of California seeking improved services for the 50,000 children under the care and jurisdiction of the Countys Department of Children and Family Services. Under the settlement between the County and the plaintiffs (the plaintiffs suit against the State continues), the County of Los Angeles agrees to expand a range of improved counseling and placement services to children as well as their biological, foster and adoptive families, to improve its decision-making process for appropriate placement for children under its care, and to work with a special six-member advisory panel to monitor County compliance with the settlement terms. Yaroslavsky Announces Permanent Westside Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced the opening of a new permanent household hazardous waste disposal facility near the Citys Hyperion Waste Treatment Plant across the Pacific Coast Highway from Dockweiler Beach. Yaroslavsky Calls for County Action on Jailhouse Staph Infections On Tuesday, February 11, 2003, at the urging of Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, the Board approved an action plan to combat a serious and persistent outbreak of a new antibiotic-resistant strain of a highly infectious skin disease called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among County jail inmates. In his earlier motion directing Health officials to report back on the problem, Yaroslavsky noted that nearly a thousand inmates were infected in 2002, with 57 hospitalized during the first eight months. Yaroslavsky Hails Treasurer-Tax Collector Efforts to Protect Seniors, Others from Tax-Delinquent Sales and Evictions Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky hailed proposals unveiled on March 4, 2003 by the Countys Treasurer-Tax Collector designed to protect seniors and others with special needs from the risk of tax-delinquent sales of their primary homes.
