Board Approves Yaroslavsky Motion to File Lawsuit Against Ahmanson Project - On January 14, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Supervisor Yaroslavsky to file a lawsuit challenging the December 17, 2002 approval by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors of the first phase of the Ahmanson Ranch Project. The proposed project would be a massive development of some 3,050 homes sited in an environmentally sensitive area on the Ventura County side of the Ventura/Los Angeles county line. Yaroslavsky noted that project planning documents rely on an outdated 10-year-old traffic study, and fail to consider other issues such as rare or endangered plant and animal species in the area and chemical contamination which may compromise the project’s groundwater supply. Board Approves Yaroslavsky Urgency Motion To Oppose Davis Plan to Cut Local Government Funding - Also on January 14, the Board Supervisors approved unanimously an urgency motion by Supervisor Yaroslavsky calling on the Legislature to reject a proposal by Gov. Davis to eliminate state funding for a program intended to protect local governments against the revenue loss from state-level reductions in vehicle license fees. Yaroslavsky noted that canceling the “VLF backfill” would cost the County of Los Angeles an estimated $663 million through June 30, 2004, roughly 30% of the County’s discretionary revenue needed to fund local services such as health care, parks, law enforcement and public safety, and well as the County’s local matching share needed to draw down additional state and federal funding.

Yaroslavsky Wins Approval for Study to Consider Extending County Survivor Benefits to Domestic Partners - On a 4-0 vote, the Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisor Yaroslavsky to ask the Los Angeles County Employee Retirement Association, the County’s pension system, to study the costs of extending survivor benefits to domestic partners of County employees and report back with the results in 60 days. Under state legislation, Los Angeles is one of three counties authorized, but not required, to offer such benefits.
