Yaroslavsky Wins Approval for EIDC Reform Package - On Monday, September 30, 2002, Supervisor Yaroslavsky won approval for an EIDC reform package aimed at cleaning up sloppy and inadequate bookkeeping and alleged financial irregularities and mismanagement at the Entertainment Industry Development Corporation. Since 1995, the EIDC has contracted with the City and County of Los Angeles to coordinate and expedite the issuance of filming permits for motion picture and TV production companies. The EIDC’s governing board includes the County Board of Supervisors, the Los Angeles City Council, the Mayor, public finance officials, and a number of entertainment industry representatives. Supervisor Yaroslavsky (left) presents a mock check for a $3 million County float loan to Pietro Vitale, founder and owner of San Fernando-based Oh Boy! packaged-foods company, to help reduce the firm’s debt and save 150 jobs at the 48-year-old facility. Joining them is San Fernando Mayor Cindy Montanez. Administered through the County’s Community Development Department, the program funnels loans to cities to assist local businesses in temporary economic difficulties. (9/27/02)

Yaroslavsky, Educators Unveil “Arts Blueprint” for Increasing Arts Education in Public Schools - On Wednesday, September 25, 2002, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky joined newly appointed County Schools Superintendent Darline P. Robles and other officials to unveil a new Regional Blueprint for Arts Education, a comprehensive effort to encourage the County’s 82 school districts to emphasize the arts as part of their core curriculum and to improve teacher training to better meet state standards for arts education. The project is a joint effort by the Board of Supervisors, the County’s Arts Commission and its Office of Education and includes the establishment of a searchable database of 300 arts organizations that provide free school arts programs and teacher training. “This is about making the arts an integral part of our curriculum just like geography, algebra and social studies,” Yaroslavsky declared during a Pasadena press conference to unveil the plan.

Yaroslavsky Announces $596,000 Federal Grant to Help Ensure Rapid-Response Capability for Nuclear, Biological or Chemical Weapon-based Terrorism - Supervisor Yaroslavsky announced Board approval on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 for his motion to accept $596,000 in federal funding for the continued development and maintenance of the West Coast National Medical Response Team to ensure ready and rapid medical response to terrorist incidents involving nuclear, biological or chemical weapons.

 

Board Adopts Yaroslavsky Proposal for On-line Board Meeting Transcripts, Streaming Video Links - On Tuesday, August 27, 2002, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Supervisor Yaroslavsky’s plan to provide linked on-line written transcripts and corresponding video of the Board’s weekly meetings.  The proposal grew out of Yaroslavsky’s earlier motion approved on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 instructing the Executive Officer of the Board to work with the Chief Administrative Officer and the Director of Internal Services to develop such plans to enhance public access to, and informed public participation in, weekly Board proceedings.
