Chickenpox Vaccine Reminder - Supervisor Yaroslavsky is reminding all parents that by July 1, 2001, state law requires chickenpox (varicella) vaccines for all children entering kindergarten and children 18 months or older entering childcare, daycare or nursery school. Without documentation of the vaccine or a doctor's verification that the child has had the disease, the child will not be allowed to enter school or a child-care program. Yaroslavsky noted that as part of a national study by the Centers for Disease Control, Los Angeles County health officials documented an 80% drop in chickenpox cases from 1995-1999, thanks to the introduction of a new vaccine and public outreach campaign. Health experts consider immunizations to be among the safest and most successful public health tools available for preventing disease and death. Click vaccines for more information, or call the Los Angeles County Health Line at (800) 427-8700.
