Yaroslavsky Unveils Internet "Passport" Plan for Foster Children - Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has unveiled an innovative proposal to create an Internet "passport" for County-supervised foster children which would contain a summary of each child's health and education information and records. Yaroslavsky noted that state law requires such a case plan for each foster child, which must accompany all status review court reports and adoption assessments, and must be furnished to each foster caretaker to ensure that the child's unique needs are properly met. Yaroslavsky said that posting the information on a special Website, with appropriate confidentiality protections, would enable the County's Department of Children and Family Services, as well as caregivers, social service and education providers, to pull up the information and utilize it for the child's benefit. Yaroslavsky said that the plan, co-sponsored with Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, would be taken up for consideration on February 20. Click here for the release.

Yaroslavsky Announces Santa Monica Courthouse Jury Room Project - Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced Board approval of a $199,765 contract with the firm of CannonDworsky to commence architect and design work on a new Jury Assembly Room for the Santa Monica Courthouse, located at 1725 Main Street. "The Santa Monica Courthouse was built 50 years ago," Yaroslavsky explained. "The jury rooms we have there now don't meet the needs of the court, and they certainly don't offer clean, comfortable and accessible surroundings for the citizens we ask to serve on our juries." He said the new jury rooms would provide some 5,600 square feet of additional space, relieving overcrowding and providing better juror facilities that meet all accessibility standards. Yaroslavsky explained that the parcel, which developers had hoped to turn into a 19-lot graded subdivision, had long been coveted by environmentalists and open-space advocates as a crucial link in the Backbone Trail Corridor, which extends from Will Rogers State Park to Point Mugu State Park in Ventura County. Part of the Arroyo Sequit Watershed, the area comprises one of the most mature riparian and oak woodlands and stream habitats in the Malibu Coastal Zone, including pools, waterfalls, riparian trees and one of the few streams in Southern California supporting steelhead trout.
