Yaroslavsky Named by Governor to State Board of Corrections - On March 17, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky was named by Gov. Gray Davis to serve as the designated Board of Supervisors appointee on the California Board of Corrections. Yaroslavsky's appointment will require confirmation by the State Senate. As Board members, Yaroslavsky and his fellow appointees will work with city and county officials to develop and maintain standards for the construction and operation of local jails and juvenile detention facilities. Search Out Child Care Centers on the Web - Supervisor Yaroslavsky recently announced that County residents in need of child care services can now click onto the new Los Angeles County Child Care website here. Yaroslavsky said that the child care directory provides names of licensed child care centers and large family child care homes (up to 14 children). The listing is provided and maintained by the California Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing Division. The directory does not provide names of licensed small family child care homes or unlicensed child care providers.

Find Your Lost Pets on the Web - Yaroslavsky recently announced that County residents can now locate lost pets, and find assistance in adopting new pets, through the newly upgraded Website of the County 's new Department of Animal Care and Control. One of the most comprehensive animal shelter Websites in the nation, it features real-time digital-image updates of available cats and dogs housed at the County's six animal shelters. The site also features pet care information, low-cost spay and neuter information, and the locations and service areas of all animals shelters within Los Angeles County.

Board Adopts Yaroslavsky Call to Action on Syphilis Outbreak, Safe Sex Education Campaign - On 3/21, the Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted Yaroslavsky's motion directing health department officials to quickly develop a program to combat a sudden outbreak of syphilis among gay men, primarily in the West Hollywood and Hollywood area. Yaroslavsky's proposal would include such measures as aggressive community outreach, public education, and condom distribution to curb the spread of the disease. While it can be easily cured with a shot of penicillin, Yaroslavsky warned that the latest syphilis outbreak could presage a far more serious problem. Two-thirds of those infected also tested positive for HIV exposure, and the unsafe sex practices that spread syphilis can also easily spread HIV/AIDS.

Yaroslavsky Announces Approval of New Conflict-of-Interest Codes - Committed to avoiding a repeat of a situation revealed in Fall, 1999 where a County employee had received a $25,000 gift toward a new Mercedes from an individual doing business with the County, Yaroslavsky has announced Board approval of a package of code updates aimed at ensuring the integrity of County operations. Yaroslavsky initiated the review of then-current conflict codes at the meeting of October 12, 1999. Thirty-three of the County's 37 departments have updated their conflict codes, with the remaining four expected to complete their updating process shortly.

Cervical Cancer Screening Extended - Yaroslavsky announced Board approval to extend the pilot projects providing no-cost cervical cancer screening and prevention services at selected County facilities through the end of March. Participating sites in the Third District include Mid-Valley Comprehensive Health Center in Van Nuys and the San Fernando Health Center. Yaroslavsky Announces Public Works Projects - Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announce Board approval of the following public works projects in the Third District:

  • New Portion of Hollyhills Storm Drain Planned - Yaroslavsky announced that a new project will soon be underway to construct a portion of the Hollyhills Drain project in the Beverly Center area. The work consists of installing a small storm drain lateral in 3rd Street from La Cienega Boulevard to Croft Avenue and in La Cienega Boulevard from Blackburn Avenue to 3rd Street. The work is part of a major storm drain project that has been underway through portions of Los Angeles, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills.
  • Malibu Sewer Improvements - Yaroslavsky announced plans to install liners in an estimated 7,300 feet of aging sewer pipe in Malibu along portions of Broad Beach Road and other City streets. Yaroslavsky said the work will repair some minor cracking and extend the life of the pipes to ensure uninterrupted service to Malibu residents.
  • Topanga, Calabasas, and West Hills Roads to be Slurry Sealed - Yaroslavsky announced plans to slurry seal approximately seven miles of pavement in Topanga, Calabasas, and unincorporated areas of West Hills. Slurry seal is a mixture of asphalt and sand applied to existing pavement to seal minor cracks and extend the life of the roadway. Yaroslavsky noted that this project calls for a type of slurry that uses recycled automobile tires as one of its components, thus extending the useful capacity of local landfills.
  • Topanga, Monte Nido, and Latigo Canyon Streets to be Repaved - Yaroslavsky has announced approval of a project to repave some five miles of County streets in Topanga Canyon, Monte Nido, and Latigo Canyon, including Latigo Canyon Road from Newton Canyon Road to west of Kanan Dume Road, Piuma Road from Saddle Peak Road to Schueren Road, Red Rock Road near Old Topanga Canyon Road, and Arteique Road from Topanga Canyon Boulevard to the end.

Board Approves Yaroslavsky, Burke Plan to Improve Child Care for County Employees, Residents - On March 7, the Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisors Yaroslavsky and Burke directing the County's Human Resources Department to report back within four months with a Strategic Plan to provide child care for County employees, and directing the County's Children's Planning Council to present its recommendations as soon as possible regarding policies to strengthen the child care infrastructure in Los Angeles County.

Yaroslavsky Calls for Expanded Audit of Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's Office - Expressing concern over reports of lost absentee ballots and lost or delayed sample ballot materials for the March 7 election, on March 14, Yaroslavsky won Board approval for a motion to expand the scope of an ongoing audit by the County's Auditor-Controller of Registrar-Recorder operations. The expanded audit will include a detailed look at the processing, responsiveness and tracking efforts associated with absentee ballot requests and mailing of sample ballot materials.

Board Adopts Yaroslavsky Motion to Improve Child-Custody Procedures - Expressing concern about potential conflicts and even domestic violence associated with unsupervised child-custody exchanges, the Board on March 21 unanimously approved Yaroslavsky's motion directing the County's Judicial Procedures Commission to develop a pilot program to engage the courts and the Sheriff's Department to assist in supervising and monitoring child-custody orders and exchanges. The Commission will report back in 90 days with a formal proposal.
