Yaroslavsky Leads Successful Drive to Turn Down Malibu Canyon Continental Communities Development Project in Calabasas - By a unanimous 4-0 vote, the Board of Supervisors adopted Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky's motion to deny approval of a massive retail and residential project in unincorporated County territory adjacent to the City of Calabasas. Yaroslavsky, local residents, open-space advocates and other opponents argued that the proposed shopping center and townhouse complex would encroach on one of the County's 61 designated Significant Ecological Areas, eliminating more than 100 oak trees and creating substantial traffic and other environmental problems. "The prospect of a major commercial center and residential complex on one of the most beautiful oak savannas in the Santa Monica Mountains within eyesight of the 101 Freeway has haunted people," Yaroslavsky said after the vote. It was the very first time, he noted, that the County has taken a stand against developers building in the Calabasas and Agoura Hills area.
