December 07, 1999 YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES TREE TRIMMING PROJECT PLANNED IN MALIBU AREA Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced that a project will soon be underway to trim 3,286 trees along various County streets in the Malibu, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Viewridge, and Woodland Crest areas. The County will open bids on December 21. Yaroslavsky said that because residents of these wooded communities are committed to preserving the forest-like atmosphere, work will be performed with maximum communication between his office, the County's Department of Public Works as project administrator, local homeowners associations, and agencies like the National Park Service and the Resource Conservation District. Trees are selected for trimming to ensure safe and adequate clearance for vehicles and pedestrians, to prevent damage to private property, and for removal of dead wood, weak, diseased or broken limbs. The work is scheduled based on a 5-year maintenance cycle that coincides with growth rates of trees in this area. All trees to be trimmed will be marked by Public Works crews. Trimmed wood will be made available to homeowners for firewood before being removed by the contractor. The contractor will also recycle tree waste. Work is expected to begin in January and be completed by March 15. Traffic and local access will not be disrupted. Residents with questions about the project are encouraged to call Dean Lehman, Public Works District Engineer, at (323) 776-7552.
