OFFERS SMART HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS
Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky reminds holiday shoppers to
remember some simple tips, courtesy of the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer
Affairs.
"We all love to share in holiday gift giving,"
Yaroslavsky said, "but we can keep buyers' remorse at bay later with these simple
shopping tips."
- Think safety in buying decorations. Ensure that circuits can
handle the holiday lights. Avoid decorations requiring extension cords; they can trip you.
- Check store refund policies. Stores aren't required to offer
refunds if you change your mind about a purchase, or find it cheaper elsewhere.
- Prepare a budget, otherwise you could end up spending more
than you thought. If you buy on credit, understand the terms of the credit agreement.
- In buying childrens gifts, avoid toys with sharp edges
and tiny parts that could detach and be swallowed by small children. Check packages for
"age-appropriate" information.
- Keep receipts and warranties in a safe place.
- In on-line shopping, be "e-wise." Guard personal
information like your Social Security number or Internet password. Avoid companies that
dont list a street address and phone number. If you pay by credit card, ensure that
the Web site has a security mode that protects your card number by encrypting it.
Yaroslavsky urged those engaged in disputes involving a
purchase to contact the County's Department of Consumer Affairs for free information and
assistance, either by phone at (213) 974-1452, or on the Web http://consumer-affairs.co.la.ca.us.
