YAROSLAVSKY REAPPOINTS WEST LOS ANGELES ATTORNEY JOHN A. MITCHELL TO NATIVE-AMERICAN INDIAN COMMISSION

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has reappointed attorney John A. Mitchell to the Los Angeles City-County Native American Indian Commission.

"I’m delighted to welcome John back to continue his service as my representative on the Commission," Yaroslavsky said. "Los Angeles County has long held the distinction of being the largest urban Native American Indian population in the country, and John’s longstanding involvement with Native American issues is greatly appreciated here."

Mitchell, an associate at the law firm of White & Case, currently serves as an adjunct professor on the faculty of Southwestern University School of Law, teaching federal Indian Law. He also performs a significant amount of pro bono legal work for indigent clients, including several California Native American Indian tribes, winning recognition last year as 1998 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year by California Indian Legal Services. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice.

Duties of the 16-member Commission include providing advice and recommendations to City and County officials concerning Indian affairs, promoting the development of programs and funding resources to serve urban American Indians, and advocating for legislation and policies on their behalf.
