YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES DENTAL HEALTH SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS FOR SAN FERNANDO VALLEY RESIDENTS

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky today announced Board approval of nine contracts to provide dental services to the medically indigent in the San Fernando Valley.

Yaroslavsky valued the contracts at $1,225,000 for the seven months remaining in the current fiscal year from the December 1, 1999 effective date, and $2.1 million for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2001, with provisions for four one-year automatic renewals through December 31, 2004.

The firms to provide the dental services are Eddie Siman, D.D.S., Inc.; H. Mintzer, D.D.S. and Associates; Laurel Canyon Dental Center; Robert Taylor Dental Clinics; San Fernando Dental Center; Vanowen Dental Center; Van Nuys-Panorama Dental Clinic; United Family Dental Center; and Northeast Valley Health Corporation.

Yaroslavsky noted that the County previously provided dental services to the medically indigent residents of the San Fernando Valley at the dental clinic at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar. Since the budget crisis of 1995, however, all dental services except for oral surgery required for hospital inpatients or those patients with acute problems such as those connected with chemotherapy had been eliminated. The need, however, continues to increase.

Yaroslavsky also noted that prior to the 1994 Northridge earthquake, general pediatric dental services were provided at the Mid-Valley Comprehensive Health Center. The Health Center was red-tagged and subsequently demolished after the quake, and a permanent replacement is now under construction at its original Van Nuys site.

Medi-Cal will reimburse the dentists for their services, Yaroslavsky said, once claims are submitted to the County. The Department is projecting the authorization of approximately 20,000 dental visits annually, the majority of which will be for outpatient emergency care, with a limited number of authorized elective procedures.
