November 11, 1999 YAROSLAVSKY URGES MTA TO EXTEND RAIL SERVICE TO STAPLES CENTER PATRONS AFTER GAMES, CONCERTS Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to begin developing plans to extend rail service for patrons of games and concerts at the new Staples Center downtown. Yaroslavsky's proposal will be formally considered by the MTA's Planning and Programming Committee on November 18. "One of the main priorities of our public transportation system should be to serve cultural and entertainment venues in the Los Angeles region," Yaroslavsky wrote. Noting that the recent opening of Staples Center affords the MTA an opportunity to promote its mass transit service in the area, Yaroslavsky called on the agency "to expand its ridership base, alleviate traffic and congestion in the downtown area and provide patrons with a convenient and safe way to attend events at Staples Center and other downtown destination sites" such as the Music Center and Disney Hall. The MTA could accomplish this, he said, either by extending operating hours of existing trains or running limited after-hours service for event-goers.
