YAROSLAVSKY UNVEILS PROGRAM TO ASSIST COUNTY EMPLOYEES WHO ARE DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky won approval this week for his proposal to establish a new program to assist County employees who are victims of domestic violence. Yaroslavsky said he expects the new Los Angeles County Employee Domestic Violence Assistance Program to be up and running by October 1, 1999, in time to coincide with the opening of "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" in the County.

The program was established as an outgrowth of Yaroslavsky’s earlier motion, approved April 13, to convene a multi-agency task force to study the issue and present findings and recommendations. A recent report by the task force concluded that an employee-assistance program for victims of domestic violence victims was both feasible and necessary.

Yaroslavsky, a long-time advocate for programs to assist victims of violence, said after the vote that, "This program will help managers and supervisor to spot the tell-tale signs of domestic violence, and to offer support and resources to employees who may be domestic-violence victims."

Yaroslavsky said the program will also establish uniform guidelines for County managers to use in documenting domestic violence situations brought to their attention, as well as protocols for giving affected employees special consideration, and for reporting relevant incidents to the proper authorities.

The program will be funded out of existing resources budgeted to the Department of Community and Senior Services, and will require no additional appropriation, Yaroslavsky noted.
