YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES WASTE TIRE MANAGEMENT CONTRACT AWARD

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced that the County has awarded Pasadena-based Parsons Engineering Science, Inc. a one-year $179,000 contract to oversee the County’s Waste Tire Management Program.

Parsons’ contract calls for the firm to determine the feasibility of building a waste-tire recycling plant to reduce the number of used tires dumped into landfills. It also requires developing a program to stimulate the waste tire recycling market; a public-education outreach program to promote recycling of used tires; promoting the use of products made from recycled tires; and conducting a "Waste Tire Amnesty Day," affording residents the opportunity to recycle their old tires.

Many experts consider the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works environmental program as the statewide model for other agencies working to meet standards laid out in the California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 (AB 939) to reduce solid-waste disposal in landfills by 50 percent.
