| April 27, 1999 YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES PILOT PROJECT TO IMPROVE BAY AND BEACH WATER QUALITY Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced a new pilot project aimed at upgrading water quality along area beaches and in Santa Monica Bay. Yaroslavsky explained that improvements soon to be underway at a pump station and two storm drain outlets will divert dry weather untreated storm drain flows into a sewage treatment plant - instead of the current practice of dumping them directly into the ocean. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works project involves the Electric Avenue Pump Station ocean outlet and the Pershing Drive ocean outlet in the City of Los Angeles, and the ocean drain outlet in the 2800 block of Bernard Way in the City of Santa Monica. The pilot program was developed by Public Works to divert the untreated stormwater runoff into treatment plants operated by the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. Yaroslavsky anticipated the project to take 30 working days for completion, commencing in June and concluding in August. Officials said that once construction begins, a temporary detour maybe established for Pershing Drive using eastbound Culver Boulevard to Nicholson Street.
