YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES SAN FERNANDO HEALTH CENTER, LIBRARY PROJECTS

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced two new civic projects to construct a replacement San Fernando Health Center, and a San Fernando Public Library.

The Health Center, replacing a facility red-tagged and demolished following the 1994 Northridge earthquake, will be rebuilt under a $2,659,000 construction contract awarded to BMP Group, with a total project budget currently estimated at $4,184,460 including engineering and design services. It will be financed through a combination of Community Development Block Grant and FEMA/OES (Federal Emergency Management Agency and state Office of Emergency Services) funds. The 10,000-square-foot facility will include a one-story, wood-framed building over a semi-subterranean reinforced concrete parking area for 34 vehicles. During construction, the San Fernando Health Center occupants, personnel, and equipment will continue operations from the interim facility at Maclay Street.

The San Fernando Library Plaza Project involves the construction of a 8,500 square foot, free-standing public library building, a 9,000 square foot retail/commercial development, a 6,174 square foot plaza, and a 67-space parking lot. The project site consists of six vacant properties totaling 44,000 square feet. Off-site improvements will include construction of water and sewer connections, removal of a driveway approach, removal and replacement of broken concrete sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, installation of a backflow preventions device, and construction of tree wells. The project site is located at 233 North Maclay Avenue in the City of San Fernando. With the Community Development Commission serving as lead agency, a total of $1.5 million in Countywide Section 108 Loan Guarantee Funds will be used for all construction costs.
