YAROSLAVSKY WINS APPROVAL TO ESTABLISH TOLL-FREE SLUM-ABATEMENT HOTLINE

Outraged by recent news reports of tenants residing at 625 S. Virgil Ave. who were denied running water for more than a month while Los Angeles city officials passed the buck and ignored their complaints, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky won approval this week for a motion directing County health officials to establish a toll-free hotline to report such blatant health and safety code violations and obtain referrals to the appropriate enforcement agency.

"Residents need and deserve a single point of access to immediately dispatch both city and county inspectors to a site," Yaroslavsky declared, noting that while many of that building’s violations fell under City jurisdiction, others - such as the lack of hot water - fall under County Health Department jurisdiction.

In addition, Yaroslavsky’s motion directed County health officials to coordinate with the appropriate agencies on a public-outreach campaign to inform tenants of their rights and opportunities for redress. Yaroslavsky estimated the toll-free (1-800) hotline could be up and running by May 1.
