YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES IMPROVEMENT PROJECT FOR WILL ROGERS STATE BEACH
Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced approval of a $657,000 contract with Gruen Associates for architectural/engineering design services on the Will Rogers State Beach General Improvements Project.
Will Rogers State Beach is located in the middle of the Santa Monica Bay Coastline, covering some 3.2 miles of ocean frontage and 87 acres of sand. A preliminary study for the project determined that the area requires capital improvements to maintain public health and safety and to provide access in accordance with "Americans with Disabilities Act" Accessibility Guidelines.
Yaroslavsky said the project entails replacing restrooms and concession buildings; refurbishing parking lots and constructing new lot entrances; installing new playground equipment and portable lifeguard stations; upgrading the lifeguard headquarters, revetment restoration to repair beach erosion, and landscaping.
The Safe Neighborhood Parks Propositions of 1992 and 1996 provide funds for the development and improvement of County-operated beaches. Funding of $6.5 million for the improvements at the Will Rogers State Beach Project was approved by the Board of Supervisors on July 16, 1996.
Gruens services will include preparing construction and bid documents, cost estimates, and record drawings; providing construction administration and consultant services, including a soil and geotechnical survey, topographic survey, traffic studies, coastal engineering, and signage and graphic design, and providing additional design services, as required.
Yaroslavsky said that Public Works officials expect to return to the Board for adoption of plans and specifications and to advertise for construction bids for this project following completion of the construction documents and jurisdictional approvals in January 2000.
