YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES 3RD DISTRICT TOPS MUSIC CENTER “BRAVO AWARD” NOMINEES

Board of Supervisors Chairman Zev Yaroslavsky hailed as “the best of the best” the 16 recently announced Third District nominees for the Music Center’s annual “Bravo Awards,” established in 1982 by the Music Center’s Education Division as the only California arts award recognizing educators and schools for excellence in all arts disciplines.

“I’m very pleased to note that once again, the Third District has produced the highest number of Bravo Award nominees in the County,” Yaroslavsky said. “It’s an amazing testament to the dedication and commitment of our teachers and schools to fire their student’s imagination and creativity through quality arts education.”

Three Bravo Awards are presented: one to a school, one to an arts teacher and one to a general classroom teacher. Robinsons · May provides the cash award of $5,000 for the winning school; this year there are 4 nominated schools. The winning Arts Specialist teacher receives $2,000; there are 32 teachers nominated in this category. The winning Generalist teacher also receives $2,000; there are 10 teachers nominated in this category. All nominees, finalists and winners receive prizes including books, tickets to performances, and educational opportunities.

The Bravo selection process begins when principals, faculty committees, superintendents or parents nominate schools and teachers affiliated with the Music Center’s Education Division. A committee made up of educators and artists reviews every application and selects finalists, who will be honored at a March 2003 gala dinner.
