YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES TREE TRIMMING PLANNED FOR TOPANGA AREA

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has announced that a project will soon be underway to trim 4,973 trees along various County streets in the Topanga area.

Yaroslavsky noted that because mountain and canyon residents are committed to preserving the community's woodland habitat, workers will trim the trees in close consultation between his office, the County's Department of Public Works as project administrator, local homeowners associations, and agencies like the Los Angeles County Forestry Division and the Resource Conservation District.

The Department schedules the trimming work based on a five-year maintenance cycle that coincides with growth rates of trees in this area. Experts select trees for trimming to ensure safe and adequate clearance for vehicles and pedestrians, to prevent damage to private property, and to remove dead wood, weak, diseased or broken limbs. The contractor will also remove 103 dead or irreversibly dying trees.

Public Works crews will mark all trees involved, and the contractor will make the trimmed wood available to homeowners for firewood before removing it. The contractor will also recycle tree waste.

Public Works officials estimated the project to cost between $145,000 and $180,000, and plan to unseal the bids on December 5, 2000.

Work is expected to begin in January and finish by March 15, in time for the nesting cycle, and will not disrupt traffic and local access. Yaroslavsky encouraged residents with questions about the project to call Dean Lehman, Public Works District Engineer, at (323) 776-7552.
