October 27, 2000 UNANIMOUS BOARD APPROVES SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS NORTH AREA PLAN The Board of Supervisors this week unanimously approved the Santa Monica Mountains North Area Plan, a planning document governing land use development, environmental protection and recreational uses for some 21,172 acres, about 32 square miles, of unincorporated County area in the Santa Monica Mountains adjoining the Cities of Calabasas, Agoura Hills and Westlake Village. Led by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, the Board's approval capped an intensive eight-year effort involving hundreds of hours of staff work and numerous public hearings and community meetings, The revised plan cuts by 32% the number of houses that could have been built under the existing interim plan, from approximately 5,400 down to 3,700. Following Yaroslavsky's lead, the Board also reversed density increases previously approved by the Regional Planning Commission on properties adjacent to sensitive park areas. In addition, the Board added new language to the Plan supporting recreational land uses. "I'm thrilled with the Board's action today," Yaroslavsky declared after the vote. "The plan we have adopted will maximize preservation of the Santa Monica Mountains, while minimizing the impacts that new development will have on the land and ensuring that it will be compatible with the existing rural community." Yaroslavsky added, "This is the legacy we leave to future generations---a Santa Monica Mountains range and its rich natural beauty that will be as striking in 100 years as it is today." Attached are Yaroslavsky's formal statement in support of the Plan before the final vote; Yaroslavsky's motion for approval; and amendments to the Plan.
