YAROSLAVSKY ANNOUNCES CITY OF CALABASAS TO TAKE OVER COUNTY'S GATES CANYON COUNTY PARK

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky announced Board approval this week for the County to convey Gates Canyon Park to the City of Calabasas, which will maintain the property for park and recreational purposes for the benefit of unincorporated and incorporated areas of the County.

"I'm very pleased we've been able to work this out," Yaroslavsky said. "This arrangement really benefits everyone."

Yaroslavsky explained that the site - located less than a quarter of a mile from the City of Calabasas - was originally dedicated by a developer to the County in 1988 to comply with provisions of the Quimby Act, which requires residential subdividers to set aside project land for parks.

Since September 1, 1993, the City has leased the park from the County, and continues to maintain and improve the facility. Among the improvements, Yaroslavsky said, are soil moisture sensors and a drip irrigation system; wind screening and resurfacing the tennis courts; planting additional trees; concrete fence repairs, court lights and light timer repairs. The City has also conducted yard waste and recycling programs in cooperation with the County’s Waste Management Division.

Park users should not even notice the change in ownership and will see no difference in services, Yaroslavsky said. As part of the deal, he noted, "The City has assured us that the park will remain open on an equal basis for Calabasas and unincorporated area residents alike."
